WASD Receives Grant for School Safety Improvements
As part of our ongoing measures to improve school security, WASD submitted an application through a $2.6 million Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant program to fund security-related equipment that addresses school safety and violence. The monies will be used to defray the cost of additional cameras for WHEC and the JSHS as well as door access systems. WFMZ recently reported on our successful application in the article below which is reprinted with permission from WFMZ.
HARRISBURG, Pa. - Millions of dollars in state money is being distributed to schools across Pennsylvania with the goal of boosting safety for students and staff, officials announced Friday.
Two schools in Berks County -- the Wyomissing Area School District and the Berks County Intermediate Unit -- are among the recipients, according to state Sen. Judy Schwank, a Berks County Democrat.
Wyomissing will receive $15,598 for cameras and door access controls; the BCIU will receive $24,979 for a metal detector and cameras.
"These funds will help keep our students safe and allow them to focus on their education," Schwank said.
The money, officials said, is intended to help prevent violent incidents in schools through programs and the use of security equipment.
The statewide total of $6.5 million in funding was awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
