Your School Board and How It Works
The School Board
The Wyomissing Area School District is governed by a nine-member Board elected from each of the two municipalities comprising the Wyomissing Area School District. These municipalities are Wyomissing Borough and West Reading Borough. Wyomissing Area School Board members serve a four-year term of office.
Role of the Board
The School Board is a policy-making body with its primary task being the formulation and evaluation of all policies necessary for the operation of the School District set within the framework of the Pennsylvania School Code. The School District is managed by an Administrative Team, which implements and works within the limits of School Board policy. The Administrative Team is guided by the Superintendent, who is elected by the School Board. Specific duties of the Board include:
- Hiring of Superintendent
- Policy Adoption
- Curriculum Adoption
- Textbook Adoption
- Maintenance, Purchases, Sales, Lease School Property
- Annual Budget Adoption
- Levying Taxes
- Ratifying Contracts
- Appointing/Dismissing Personnel
- Creating or Increasing Indebtedness
- Adopting School Calendar
- Others as Dictated by PA School Code
Superintendent
The Superintendent is appointed by the Board and serves as its chief executive officer in administering Board policies in the operation of the District. The Superintendent also acts as advisor in keeping the Board informed of the needs and programs of the District. Because the Superintendent is available to the Board as a professional resource, he/she
makes recommendations prior to Board action relating to policy; recruitment, election, and supervision of professional staff; selection of textbooks and instructional materials; development of curriculum; school facilities planning; and fiscal affairs.
Central Administration Team
The members of the Central Administration Team regularly attend the Board meetings and advise the Superintendent and the Board on various matters related to their areas of supervision.
Solicitor
The School Board Solicitor is an attorney retained by the School Board as a legal counselor and advisor to the School Board.
