Wyomissing Area Grows Girls Wrestling Program

As female wrestling continues to grow in popularity across the country, the girls wrestling program at Wyomissing Area is growing too. Currently, a group of female athletes participates on the traditionally “boys” team, but with changes occurring county-wide, Wyomissing Area hopes to create its very own female wrestling team in the near future. Throughout the county, there are four sanctioned female teams which include: Governor Mifflin, Exeter, Brandywine Heights, and Berks Catholic.

Field Trip to Philadelphia

AP United States History students took a trip to Philadelphia last month to enhance their learning and create a positive learning environment. Students did a walking tour of the city and visited the Liberty Bell building, Independence Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, 1st B.U.S., 2nd B.U.S., Christ Church, the Constitution Center, and the Eastern State Penitentiary.

Entering the workforce, attending a trade school or a 4-year institution, or enlisting in the military are all possible options for Wyomissing Area students post-graduation, but how do they know which path is right for them? The Wyomissing Area faculty and staff, along with a team of dedicated volunteers and community partners, work to alleviate this anxiety by coordinating Career Day giving students the chance to learn more about and explore the possible paths available.

Special Spartan Accomplishment: 2021 Pennsylvania High School PE Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Jodi Reardon

In March, Spartan Physical Education teacher Mrs. Jodi Reardon was recognized for her hard work and dedication at the local level representing physical education teachers in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Berks Counties as the regional 2021 High School PE Teacher of the Year. In November, Mrs. Reardon’s impact as a teacher was recognized state-wide when she earned recognition as the Pennsylvania High School PE Teacher of the Year. This is a huge accomplishment for Mrs. Reardon and shines a light on the great things our Physical Education Department does for our Spartan students.

Students enjoy this day to sleep in, catch up on work, and connect with friends; however, for teachers and administrators this is time to complete some behind the scenes work and continue to improve their practice.

Time in the library is a special and important part of the school day for our students at WHEC, and Mrs. Boerger identified a way to partner with the Jr./Sr. High School to ensure that our younger Spartans have unique opportunities while getting the support they need during library time.

Wyomissing Area Spartans End the Streak

The Wyomissing Area Spartans football team has had a fantastic season right from the start but knew they faced a big challenge in their game against the Southern Columbia Tigers in early October. The Tigers have won four consecutive State Championships and entered the game in the middle of a 65-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation.

Special Spartan Accomplishment: National Merit Semi-Finalists

Every Fall, high school juniors at Wyomissing Area and nearly four million students nationwide take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test), as a practice testing experience in preparation for taking the SAT. Students taking the exam are automatically placed in the running for the National Merit Scholarship which is both an academic honor and college scholarship.

West Reading Elementary Center Partners with Olivet Boys’ and Girls’ Club

Starting in late September of this year, the West Reading Elementary Center has partnered with the Olivet Boys’ and Girls’ Club to establish an Olivet after-school program at the WREC building. The program will begin serving students in grades five and six but will eventually open to students in grades three through seven.
