In early May, teachers and staff members across the District were celebrated as part of Teacher Appreciation Week.

The Wyomissing Area School District celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2022 at their graduation ceremony on June 3, held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

Our 7th-grade “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” team won the Outstanding Team Spirit award in this year’s competition.

As female wrestling continues to grow in popularity across the country, the girls wrestling program at Wyomissing Area is growing too. Currently, a group of female athletes participates on the traditionally “boys” team, but with changes occurring county-wide, Wyomissing Area hopes to create its very own female wrestling team in the near future. Throughout the county, there are four sanctioned female teams which include: Governor Mifflin, Exeter, Brandywine Heights, and Berks Catholic.

Students at the Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center and West Reading Elementary Center participated in this year’s Hour of Code activity. “Hour of Code” is a worldwide event aimed at promoting participation in the field of computer science.

Fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Nancy Boyer collaborates with other social studies teachers around the world as a member of a virtual social studies professional learning community.

AP United States History students took a trip to Philadelphia last month to enhance their learning and create a positive learning environment. Students did a walking tour of the city and visited the Liberty Bell building, Independence Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, 1st B.U.S., 2nd B.U.S., Christ Church, the Constitution Center, and the Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Jr./Sr. High School is excited to announce “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” (WSCM) is returning as an opportunity for our Spartans this year.

Students in Mrs. Kozuch’s sixth-grade class have been provided with a new opportunity with the West Reading Police Department.

Our fourth-grade Spartans participated in the 4-H Embryology Program once again through Penn State University.

Wyomissing Area School District is excited to implement new roles in our school buildings this year: instructional coaches and specialists. We are pleased to announce four instructional coaches along with two instructional specialists.

The celebration is called WHEC Bus Love Day and it took place on Friday, October 15th. We celebrated by giving our bus drivers stoplight cookies and homemade cards from students.

At the Jr./Sr. High School counselors are hoping to help reduce students’ stress with the new Self-Care Center.

Students at the West Reading Elementary Center participated in Red Ribbon Week: a weeklong celebration about making healthy choices and what that looks like for our fifth and sixth grade students.

The different pathways available for students for life after high school can often be overwhelming. Entering the workforce, attending a trade school or a 4-year institution, or enlisting in the military are all possible options for Wyomissing Area students post-graduation, but how do they know which path is right for them? The Wyomissing Area faculty and staff, along with a team of dedicated volunteers and community partners, work to alleviate this anxiety by coordinating Career Day giving students the chance to learn more about and explore the possible paths available.

Congratulations to our Fall Athletes for earning accolades for their sports.

In March, Spartan Physical Education teacher Mrs. Jodi Reardon was recognized for her hard work and dedication at the local level representing physical education teachers in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Berks Counties as the regional 2021 High School PE Teacher of the Year. In November, Mrs. Reardon’s impact as a teacher was recognized state-wide when she earned recognition as the Pennsylvania High School PE Teacher of the Year. This is a huge accomplishment for Mrs. Reardon and shines a light on the great things our Physical Education Department does for our Spartan students.

While students enjoyed a day off on Monday, October 11th, the Wyomissing Area faculty and staff were hard at work for a teacher in-service day full of professional learning opportunities. Students enjoy this day to sleep in, catch up on work, and connect with friends; however, for teachers and administrators this is time to complete some behind the scenes work and continue to improve their practice.

After 24 years of teaching Mrs. Andrea Boerger transitioned this year to the Librarian role at the Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center. Time in the library is a special and important part of the school day for our students at WHEC, and Mrs. Boerger identified a way to partner with the Jr./Sr. High School to ensure that our younger Spartans have unique opportunities while getting the support they need during library time.

A new Hope Blossoms mural has sprouted on Franklin Street in Reading. October 21 marked the official dedication of the mural which resembles persons experiencing mental health challenges as well as those who have been affected by or contemplated suicide.

In October, the Aevidum Club at the Jr./Sr. High School held its first Aevidum Week which paralleled National Mental Health Awareness Week.

September is recognized as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month which is represented through the color gold. Throughout the entire month, students at the West Reading Elementary Center were challenged to wear gold or white to show their support.

On Friday, October 8th, first graders at Wyomissing Hills had their annual Teddy Bear Picnic.

The Wyomissing Area Spartans football team has had a fantastic season right from the start but knew they faced a big challenge in their game against the Southern Columbia Tigers in early October. The Tigers have won four consecutive State Championships and entered the game in the middle of a 65-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation.

Every Fall, high school juniors at Wyomissing Area and nearly four million students nationwide take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test), as a practice testing experience in preparation for taking the SAT. Students taking the exam are automatically placed in the running for the National Merit Scholarship which is both an academic honor and college scholarship.

As the Wyomissing Area School District continues to develop the Internship Program, we are fortunate to have talented students work with our Communications team to develop the articles you read in each edition of The Spartan Scoop.

Welcome back to school! Wyomissing Area Education Foundation (WAEF) is looking forward to a new school year that brings chances to enhance educational opportunities for the Wyomissing Area School District.

Taking advantage of community ties and building relationships between schools, Wyomissing Area is fortunate to partner with Wilson School District to provide Wyomissing Area students the opportunity to participate in the JROTC program at Wilson High School.

Students in their senior year at Wyomissing Area and Wilson High School have the opportunity to participate in a welding internship program at Morgan Corporation in Morgantown, PA. Morgan Corporation is a national company that supplies truck bodies all across the United States.

This year, the Wyomissing Area School District is excited to develop a Hope Squad. The mission of the Hope Squad is to reduce youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention.

The Wyomissing Area School District prides itself on the ways our staff and students get involved in our community and our partnership with the Science Research Institute (SRI) at Albright College is continuing to create new opportunities for staff and students alike.

WHEC has kicked off the 2021-2022 school year in a wonderful way. Mrs. DeRenzo welcomed our community of readers back to WHEC with passion and determination.

Starting in late September of this year, the West Reading Elementary Center has partnered with the Olivet Boys’ and Girls’ Club to establish an Olivet after-school program at the WREC building. The program will begin serving students in grades five and six but will eventually open to students in grades three through seven.

Opening day of the 2021-2022 school year marked the first time since 2019 that our entire district faculty was able to safely gather together in person and prepare for the arrival of our students and the beginning of a new school year.

This summer, members of the Wyomissing Area School District’s administrative team partnered with New Journey Community Outreach to pack and distribute food to those in need. Along with the 150 bags of lunch that were packed during this event, a clothing drive was also provided for community members.
