The Wyomissing Area Spartans football team has had a fantastic season right from the start but knew they faced a big challenge in their game against the Southern Columbia Tigers in early October. The Tigers have won four consecutive State Championships and entered the game in the middle of a 65-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation. On Friday, October 1, the Wyomissing Area Spartans traveled two hours to the Tigers’ stadium for a 7:00 pm game. The Spartans and Tigers clashed heads throughout the game but after a long fought game by both teams, the final score was 41-21 Spartans. This game was the biggest game in the state, the game of the week to watch, and was streamed on PCN. That night all streaks ended for the Tigers. The Spartans walked away with a victory.
Such a big accomplishment and win during a landmark game in high school football creates lots of emotions for the players and coaches. Head Coach Bob Wolfrum, Offensive Coordinator Frank Ferrandino, and Defensive Coordinator Andy Siggins expressed that they were disappointed when the Spartans’ lost their opportunity to compete against Southern Columbia last year, as it would have been a great growing opportunity for the team and tested the players in new ways. They were eager for the opportunity for the Spartans to compete against the Tigers this year. All three coaches shared great things about Southern Columbia, highlighting what a great team they are, how great the atmosphere was at their home field, and how humble the team was both before and after the game. All of the coaches are proud of the Spartan’s accomplishment noting that it was a major success to break the streak and defeat a great team. However, the coaches enjoyed the excitement for a few days before focusing on the next game and the next team. It isn’t every day that a team has a win this big. Due to the dedication and passion of the coaching staff and hard work by our student athletes, our Spartans continuously work to be the best they can be on and off the field and this exciting accomplishment highlights their efforts. Congratulations, Spartans!
